Hurricane Safety and Home Preparation
As you watch the news and follow a storm pattern it is important to know the type of storm
HURRICANE WATCH = Conditions are a threat within 48 hours
HURRICANE WARNING = Conditions are a threat within 36 hours
Hurricanes are measured on a scale from 1 to 5, depending on the winds’ strength and damage potential.
Category 1: 74- 95 mph. Damage potential: minimal
Category 2: 96-110 mph. Damage potential: moderate
Category 3: 110-130 mph. Damage potential: extensive
Category 4: 131-155 mph. Damage potential: extreme
Category 5: more than 156 mph. Damage potential: catastrophic
Preparation Tips and Suggestions for Safety
· Create a family communication plan to identify a family member who lives out of state who you can notify when safe
· Chose a physical location to meet if communication between family is down.
· Map out escape plans and practice as a family
· Have a minimum 3-day supply of food and water, per person
· Gather and keep all of your important documents in one place
· Have a portable radio, flashlight, extra batteries, and a mobile charger.
· Make sure you have some cash available, in addition to your credit/debit cards.
· Keep pets safe by ensuring they wear their collars during the storm and have enough pet food with water for 2 weeks
· Keep your gas tank full.
· Discuss where to meet in case of an evacuation.
